Your purpose is not the thing you do. It is the thing that happens in others when you do what you do
Welcome to Riana Brown Attorneys
I believe that the true measure of one’s actions lies in the impact they have on others, and this philosophy guides my approach to legal matters. My practice focuses on understanding the specific needs and concerns of my clients, and using my legal expertise to create positive outcomes that extend beyond the courtroom.

Years Experience
about me
A Jack of all trades and master of none is often times better than the master of one.
I grew up in Rustenburg in a loving home with my older brother, beloved mother and late father who instilled in me the values that drives me to live by the maxim, do no harm.
After completing matric I enrolled at Tukkies with aspirations to become war Journalist. This led me to serving on the RAG Committee for two years and this extraordinary experience taught me how truly rewarding selflessly helping people could be.
To become financially independent, I started working as a waitress and subsequently a bartender at Dropzone and Chilli’s in Hatfield square. I learned valuable lessons in human behaviour and experienced unkind treatment from many who saw this career path as degrading, which instilled in me empathetic and nonjudgmental values which I carry with me in my practice.
An opportunity to work as a manager at Chilli’s steered my life in a different direction when the owners offered me a crash course in bookkeeping, allowing me to eventually apply for a job as a Debtor’s clerk at Protea Hotels where I met my now bookkeeper and dear friend Marisa.
Marisa taught me everything I needed to know to eventually become an Assistant Financial Manager but without the necessary qualification to further my career, I realised I had to consider studies in finance. At the time, the Oscar Pistorius trial swayed me into an impulsive decision to rather enrol for my LLB degree at the age of 30 in 2014.
After completing my first year of studies I got the opportunity to commence my articles at Bennie Reynders Attorneys and left the hospitality industry behind. I gained valuable experience from a seasoned practitioner in Family Law and General Litigation whilst learning the ropes of the court systems and administrative procedures.
Sharing in the office space was Nicole Mitchell, a specialised Defence and seasoned Litigation Attorney who made me realise early on how it is possible to remain true to yourself whilst navigating a successful career in this cutthroat environment. I continue to have gratitude for the long-term relationship I maintain with my colleague who remains a friend, mentor and inspiration to this day.
After serving two years of articles, I received an offer to cede to a specialised Family Law practice in Johannesburg. Helen Mattisson was a valuable mentor with who I have maintained a close relationship and often assist with in matters in the Pretoria region.
The daily commute to and from Johannesburg placed tremendous strain on my ability to attend to my part-time studies and fulfill my responsibilities as a wife and a parent. This led to a move back to a Pretoria firm, where I completed my articles at Taute, Bouwer & Cilliers Incorporated.
I served the remainder of my articles under Carel Taute, a seasoned Defence Attorney and erstwhile Prosecutor who gave me my first real taste of practising Criminal Law that ended up becoming my biggest passion. I was also blessed to receive training in the winding up of Deceased Estates from fellow Director Philip Cilliers, the author of Meyerowitz on Administration of Estates and their Taxation and a valuable colleague I still reach out to when faced with a complex Estate matter.
During this time, I completed my Practical Legal Training through LEAD (Legal Education and Development) and wrote my four Admissions Examinations to meet all the requirements for admission as an Attorney upon completion of my LLB degree.
I completed my studies at the end of 2018 and got admitted as an Attorney of the High Court in May of 2019. I stayed on at the firm as a Professional Assistant whilst completing my Practice Management training in the second half of 2019. During this time I obtained my Right of Appearance in the lower courts, I attended to various matters and gained valuable experience allowing me to represent my clients in court.
I continued my employment as a Professional Assistant until May of 2021 when Riana Brown Attorneys was established.
I obtained my Right of Appearance in the High Court in August of 2022 allowing me to also represent my clients in the Superior Courts, especially those who cannot afford the appointment of an Advocate.
I am an accredited Criminal Law practitioner with Judicare, a system where Legal Aid South Africa procures the services of private practitioners to represent individuals who does not have the financial means to obtain legal representation. In addition to my private practice, I have been representing the less fortunate in the District, Regional and Specialised Commercial Crimes Courts since 2023.
Albeit that Criminal Law is my passion, I also attend to the winding up of Deceased Estates, Family Law and general Litigation in the Magistrate and High Courts.
I have a specific interest in Domestic Violence and Harassment matters and advocate strongly for the rights of the much-underreported male victims of Domestic Violence
I am also a certified Mediator, striving to curb the costs of litigation and guiding clients to resolve disputes where it is appropriate and sometimes necessary to rather settle.
I believe in always being collegial which has resulted in many long-term relationships built with colleagues over the years. This allows for a healthy environment to practice in and promotes resolving disputes outside the court room in many instances whilst still acting in the best interests of our respective clients.
My firm structure allows me to be personally invested and involved in all my clients’ matters for who I strive to create an environment where they can feel safe to share and seek assistance for really any legal predicament they may find themselves in.
Expert in the Field of Law
My Skills & Experience

Criminal Law
I offer assistance in any criminal matter regardless of the perceived severity or nature of the offense.
It is better to risk saving a guilty man than to condemn an innocent one. - Voltaire
Domestic Violence
Assistance for men, woman and children
The biased use of pronouns serves to perpetuate the culturally based myth that men are perpetrators and woman are victims. This myth is extremely damaging to the millions of male victims of sexual and physical abuse who live unacknowledged by our society. ― David Lisak
Family Law
Mediation Approach
Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbour to compromise whenever you can. As a peacemaker the lawyer has superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough. - Abraham Lincoln.
Deceased Estates
Assistance with compassion
Clients are grieving the loss of a loved one. I do not loose sight of this when dealing with the formalities of winding up the estate.
Litigation
Strategic Skills
When mediation fails, I offer skilled and strategic litigation services in the Magistrates' and High Courts.

My personal journey with Riana started in 2020 during my divorce proceedings. Riana is a straight shooter, she knows exactly what suits you and your legal obligations. She connects on a personal level to ease your stress and takes everything onto her. She always puts you and your family's needs and requirements first, and with ease. She does not beat around the bush. Riana still manages all my legal requirements and we still check in on one another, even if it's just to say hi. She comforted us during both my parents' passings. You are not just a number, to her you are a lifelong commitment. Riana is my GO-TO PERSON, her approach and passion for her work defies all odds, and she is recommendable. Deciding to divorce is a scary and expensive decision. After unsuccessfully contacting several attorneys a friend recommended I see Mrs Brown. I immediately liked her energy. Her fees are more than fair, and she ALWAYS answers my WhatsApp’s/calls, which is very important to me. I feel Mrs Brown understands the difficulties that come with divorce – she isn't just "in it for the money" – she genuinely cares. I found that some of the lawyers I had contact with prior had given me bad and incomplete information. I also felt that they were rushing me through this traumatic situation. Mrs Brown never did that to me. She made me feel comfortable in her presence and confident in her abilities. I have, and will continue to recommend Mrs Brown.

Working with Riana Brown has been one of the most reassuring parts of an incredibly difficult journey. She hasn’t just acted as my lawyer — she has been a steady source of strength, empathy, and relentless support throughout my case. I always felt like she was fighting not just for me, but with me, as if my case was her own. Her professionalism is unmatched, but what sets her apart is her heart. She listens, she cares, and she explains everything clearly — making sure I always felt informed and empowered. She’s sharp, strategic, and never backs down when it matters most. I honestly don’t know how I would have coped without her in my corner. If you’re looking for someone who is more than just a lawyer — someone who truly shows up for you — I cannot recommend Riana enough

When I found myself in one of the most emotionally draining and difficult battles of my life—fighting for relief regarding financial support and to ensure that my daughter’s best interests were truly taken to heart, Mrs. Riana Brown stood by me every step of the way. She wasn’t just my attorney; she became a pillar of strength during a time when I felt completely overwhelmed and unheard. Mrs. Brown is deeply respectful, hands-on, and compassionate. She genuinely cares about her clients and the outcomes of their cases. She took the time to listen, to understand my fears and concerns, and she fought fiercely to protect both my rights, my daughter’s rights and our overall wellbeing. Her professionalism, paired with her heart for justice, is truly rare.
